Monthly hosts are needed for Wednesday Night In. If you would like to host a Wednesday Night In, please contact Leslie Brock.

CALLING ALL ELVES! As we all know, magical holidays are a gift to ourselves and those around us and we ask you to be an Elf on the UU–holiday team 2008. We need a variety of elves, those to head up teams and those to play minor supporting roles, so there is room for everyone. If you are able to be on a holiday team please let us know and soon you will find secret elf messages of projects and some fun in your mailbox. Not to mention your official UU–Elf pin to wear through the holiday season! Here’s what we need:

Decorator Elves: ( we are looking for a team head for this project) Like to trim a tree? Gather pine boughs from your back yard? String ribbon or lights? If so, this is the elf-job for you. Target date for festooning the church is December 7th at 9:30 am. We will need evergreen and pine cuttings, pine cones, and other stuff that can be gathered from nature. Do you happen to have a some greens from your backyard that would work?

Cookie Ministry Elves: This team is being headed up by everyone's favorite elf, Kay McCurdy, so if you like to bake cookies or candy, this is for you. The cookie ministry is looking for not only bakers but eggnog and cider bringers for the Christmas Eve Service reception. There is also a need for a set up team for that night as well as a clean up team. Things will be fast and easy as we will be using biodegradable paper cups and napkins since elfs get grumpy when they have to hang around late and do dishes!

Please say that you will be a apart of making our UU holiday season bright. I look forward to hearing back from you in the next week. Remember, that many elves make for light work! There is something every elf can do! Contact Maddie Kertay with any general questions or Kay McCurdy for participation in the Cookie Ministry.

SCENIC CITY CHORALE CONCERT. Put the date of December 5 (Friday) at 7:30 pm on your calendars to hear the Scenic City Chorale sing holiday carols arranged by John Rudder at the Brainerd United Methodist Church. Appearing with the chorale will be our own Skip Stevens and the Atlanta Peach State Brass. Free Admission, parking available on Tuxedo Street & shuttle bus.

PAGAN STUDY GROUP. December 7 at 9:30 am - Topic: Winter Festivals.

ADVENTURES COUPON BOOKS. They’re Baaaack! Two for one coupons for casual dining, fine dining, the Hunter Museum, Chattanooga Symphony, Tennessee Valley Railroad, van service to the Atlanta and Nashville airports, and much, much more! You can start using the coupons immediately; you don't need to wait til next year. There's a sample book in the fellowship area. Take a look. And then see Chris Tregaskis or Daidee Springer to purchase. You'll get your $30 purchase price back by using just a coupon or two. This mini fundraiser for the church is a mega–bargain for you.

ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR. Harold Linn has a free, electric wheelchair available to anyone in need. It may need a battery, but otherwise it is in good working order. Please contact Harold directly.

TREE OF LIGHTS. Each year we put up a Tree of Lights up in the fellowship area. This tree has tags representing clients from Chattanooga Cares and Women and Children from the Domestic Violence Shelter. Chattanooga Cares asks for gift cards from various businesses which make it easier for their clients to buy something they need. The list of gifts on the cards for the women and children in the shelter is a wish list. They do not expect to get everything on their list. Anything you can do to help make this Christmas Season a little happier for these individuals is always appreciated. If you can buy something for one of these people, please take a card, write your name and phone number on the sheet, located on the table, next to that individual. Please bring wrapped gifts or gift cards back, with original tag attached, to the church by December 12th.

New this year. Among our membership are several people who are struggling. If you would like to help them out, use the wrapped box next to the tree. QUESTIONS? Contact Leslie Brock. Also, if you don’t have time to shop, Leslie is always happy to do your shopping for you.

MEDIEVAL ROOM. Coming soon to a UU downstairs near you! The Medieval room ( first room to the left at the bottom of the staircase) will be open from 9:30 am till 10:55 and function as a supervised kid-lounge and community spot for our church kids ages 6-12ish who arrive early for service. Currently older kids are invited to meet in the Teen room and younger kids should be brought to the nursery unless under direct supervision of their parents. This new room will give space to the fastest growing segment of our UU church population! Kid-lounge will open on Dec 7th and we welcome everyone to come have a look! Want to help with this project? If so see Maddie Kertay or Kay McCurdy.

DOUBLE THE PLATE. This Sunday is our second Double the Plate Sunday of the year. An anonymous member of the congregation has agreed to match the amount we receive in the offering up to $500, excluding only pledge payments. Last time we had Double the Plate we beat the challenge of $300 by $65. Our donor this time has really upped the ante and clearly doesn’t think we can do much better. Let’s prove this doubter donor wrong!

PRIVET PATROL & PIZZA PARTY! After church this Sunday, November 9. The attack continues to rid our church grounds of that alien species privet plus other invaders. Invigorating temperatures will give us extra energy to spruce up, winterize our land and prepare for spring. Your reward? Fun with other UUs, wholesome exercise, and free pizza! Wear your warm work clothes and bring yard work tools if you have any. A truck is needed to carry off excess brush. A pizza pickup person is also needed. Please contact Sandy Kurtz if you can help with either.

NO INTERLUDE THIS WEEK. Interlude returns Wednesday, November 19 at 6:00 pm. Interlude is a quiet mid-week service of about a half hour. Everyone welcome.

NEXT SUNDAY NOVEMBER 16 IS SOUPER SUNDAY. What better way to warm up than with a nice bowl of soup and some crusty bread? Bring a large pot of your best soup and a loaf of crusty bread and enjoy a potluck meal after service that day. NOTE! This is a soup and bread only meal, please do not bring other items as we will not be set up to serve them...Desserts will be provided by the Membership Committee to honor our new members! Questions? Contact Maddie Kertay.

WATERING THE PLANTS. Christina Koch has graciously volunteered to watch the house plants in the sanctuary. If you are watering them as well, please stop.

LUNCH WITH CHARLIE CLEMENTS. Our speaker on November 23 is Charlie
Clements, the president and CEO of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. WOW! You are invited to share lunch and conversation with Charlie beginning about 1 p.m. that Sunday. But you must sign up and pay for this special event in advance. The deadline to sign up and pay is Sunday, November 16. Cost for lunch is $12 per person. There's a sign-up sheet in the fellowship area or you can call the church office. Please note that payment is expected beforehand to secure your place at the table.

BEE HIVE COLLECTIVE - Have you heard about the Bee Hive Collective? They are an artist/activist group who've been together a long time. They make posters about issues and travel around to promote awareness of their chosen issue. Their current project is about Mountain Top Removal in Appalachia. They are traveling to Atlanta and then on to Florida and would love to come to Chattanooga and hold a lecture and display. Their posters ar 32' high so they need a tall space, ladders, public and HONEY. Honey is the bee term for money and they need between $800 and $2000 to come here. I'm looking for 8 dedicated activists to raise $100 each to bring the bees and help them in their mission to finish the MTR poster and get it printed. A group or organization could act as one of the G <I mean Bee-8.

They would like to come to Chattanooga either the first week of November on their way to Atlanta or on the 18 and 19 of November. Sequatchie Valley Institute has agreed to be a sponsor for the bees coming here. Hopefully their board can donate one of the 8 needed $100. If you can pledge to raise $100 please write me back asap. Once I have 8 fundraisers, I will set the date. I would like to set it now! I am hoping to get two places in town for them to show. I think Green Spaces and UTC would be great. I'm open to ideas. Maybe the Sierra Club and EDGE will help. To get excited about the bees, go to this website and help start the buzz: http://beehivecollective.blogspot.com We may be able to host a bee benefit when they are here????
